The Chemical Compounds Found in Cannabis
Humans have a system in the body by the name of the endocannabinoid system that helps regulate a variety of bodily functions (including sleep, mood, memory, appetite, reproduction and pain sensation) through the use of endocannabinoids, receptors and enzymes. Cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant closely imitate those our bodies produce naturally. There have been over 85 types of cannabinoids found in the plant, however most products tend to focus on Delta9- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). Other popular cannabinoids include: CBG, CBC, CBN, THCA, CBDA, AND THCV, but we’ll get into that later.
How do cannabinoids work?
While the cannabis plant is closely associated with THC and CBD these compounds are not what the plant actually synthesizes. The plant synthesizes acids that need to be decarboxylated ( the process of activating the acids usually through heat) in order to create the desirable effects. Decarboxylation takes place when you burn your flower, vape your concentrates, and serves as a step in the edible making process. In the next sections we will be expanding on the cannabinoids that are most commonly sold through our store and the uses for them.
THCA
Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in raw and live cannabis. As the plant dries or is exposed to heat the THCA is converted to the more well-known cannabinoid THC.
- Beneficial For:
- Inflammation
- Neuroprotection
- Nausea and appetite loss
- Insomnia
- Pain
- Muscle Spasms
- Common Products:
- Papa & Barkley tinctures
- Mary’s Medicinal patches
- Getzen Nitecap capsules
- CKS Serenity tinctures
THC
Tetrahydrocannabinol is the the chemical compound in cannabis that is responsible for a euphoric high. This is the cannabinoid most commonly sold at our store and a large majority of the products we sell will contain this cannabinoid.
- Beneficial For:
- Stress
- Pain relief
- Energy
- Sleep
- Appetite loss
- Common Products:
- Edibles
- Topicals and Tinctures
- Patches
cbda
Cannabidiolic acid is the precursor to CBD found in live plants of CBD varieties. Time and heat will turn CBDA into CBD. Very similar to CBD but many have found CBDA to absorb faster to provide faster relief. Like CBD it is non-intoxicating.
- Beneficial for:
- Inflammation and related pain
Nausea
- Inflammation and related pain
- Common Products:
- CKS CBDA/CBD 1:1 Tincture
- Myriam’s Hope CBDA
cbd
The compound found in cannabis and hemp that is non-psychoactive. While it won’t get you “high”, CBD is one of the most studied cannabinoids due to its many claimed uses.
- Beneficial For:
- Pain Relief
- Inflammation
- Nausea
- Stress
- Mood
- Common Products:
- Select tinctures
- Care By Design
CBN
Cannabinol is a minor non-intoxicating compound that is created when THC ages. When mixed with THC it can create a sedating effect that may benefit those with sleeping problems. CBN can also increase the euphoric effects of THC.
- Beneficial for:
- Anti-bacterial
- Neuroprotectant
- Appetite stimulation
- Inflammation
- Sleep
- Common Products:
- Camino Midnight Blueberry gummies
- Kikoko tea and mints
- Mary’s Medicinals capsules, patches, topicals, transdermal pens, and tinctures
- Wyld Elderberry gummies.
THCV
Tetrahydrocannabivarin, or THCV, is a psychoactive cannabinoid found most prevalently in Sativa strains of cannabis. It is known to produce a more motivated, alert and energizing feeling of euphoria. For this reason, it is often recommended for daytime or any time when functionality is important.
- Beneficial For:
- Suppressing appetite
- Anxiety
- Tremors
- Motor control
- Stimulates bone growth
CBC
Cannabichromene, or CBC, is a powerful, non-psychoactive cannabinoid, meaning it will not cause a patient to feel “high.” CBC, like THC and CBD, has been shown to encourage the human brain to grow by increasing the viability of developing brain cells in a process known as neurogenesis.
- Beneficial For:
- inflammation
- stem/progenitor cell function
- mood
CBG
Cannabigerol (CBG) is a type of cannabinoid obtained from the cannabis plant. It’s often referred to as the mother of all cannabinoids. This is because other cannabinoids are derived from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), an acidic form of CBG
- Beneficial For:
- inflammation
- pain
- nausea
